ALTERNATIVE FUELS IN SHIPPING

technical feasibility, safety challenges and regulatory framework
(two days course)

Target group: decision-makers and technical managers in shipping companies, at yards, major suppliers and design offices.

Content: This course provides the detailed background for the development of business cases and design concepts for projects related to alternative fuels in shipping. Key items covered are:

  1. Introduction to low flashpoint fuels (liquefied gases and liquids)

  2. Low flashpoint fuels safety principles (half day):

  3. The IGF Code and the major design aspects related to this mandatory IMO regulation.
    Review and key regulations from all IGF-Code sections. For tank location, a practical training will be provided.
    Topic covered are:

    • The current Code for LNG and CNG as ship fuel:

    • The Code versions under preparation: Methanol, Ethanol, Fuel cell Systems, LPG.

    • The outlook to other fuel options: hydrogen, ammonia and others.
